I don’t remember the last time a man opened a door for me on a date, or when one of my friends said thank you to me for lending a helping hand. Although feminism has changed the mannerisms expected of a man during an outing with a woman, proper etiquette has disappeared. With modern technology, it’s easier for a person to text an abbreviated “thx” rather than type out the full word or even bother to say thank you to another face to face. In today’s society, it seems as though manners have been left in the dust along with typewriters, floppy disks, and flip phones.
Last month, the Duchess of Cambridge showed the world how maintaining etiquette can positively affect the lives of others in the simplest of ways. Catherine Elizabeth Mountbatten-Windsor celebrated her 35th birthday and in return for all the birthday messages she received, she sent her guests individual thank you notes for the birthday wishes. The royal mailed out each note to each of her guests that read,
“The Duchess of Cambridge was touched that you took the trouble to write as you did on the occasion of her birthday. It really was most thoughtful of you and Her Royal Highness sends you her warmest thanks and best wishes.”
The Duchess’ exquisite manners took the internet by storm. The thank you was put into a Kensington Palace envelope that included Kate’s note and a picture of herself when she went on the royal tour in Canada. Due to her thoughtful actions, the Duchess received very positive reactions from the public eye. This display of thoughtfulness added to The Duchess’ already glorified reputation. It just goes to show how simple acts of politeness can go a long way.
