“Party like it’s 1999!” That party will continue through 2017 and beyond. Prince has become an iconic part of American music leaving listeners with the hopes that one day rain will actually be purple. Sadly, not everything about Prince was great. Aside from his fabulous fashion, incredible vocal range, and his ability to entertain any audience, he had his fair share of issues. On Wednesday, his ex-wife, Mayte Garcia, revealed the truth about her relationship with Prince as she released her new memoir, The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince.
Back in 1996 on October 16, the new parents were mesmerized with their new baby boy, Amiir. Both Garica and Prince were thrilled over their new little addition to their budding family. According to Garcia the world-renown singer was “bursting with joy” when their baby finally arrived.
The family was ready to start their new life together until complications arose regarding baby Amiir’s health. Not long after his birth, baby Amiir was diagnosed with Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, a very rare genetic disorder. Six days later after his diagnosis, Amiir passed away due to breathing complications.
The loss hit Garcia and Prince hard. Garcia spent most of her days in bed desperately clutching her baby boy’s ashes. Meanwhile, Prince fled leaving Garcia alone to grieve. Garcia wrote that Prince came to her and said, “I can’t be here. I have to go.”
Prince never returned to the house. The loss of both her son and her husband caused Garcia to go into a major depression due to the effects both of them had on her life. “I don’t think he ever got over it,” Garcia wrote. “I don’t know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.”
Garcia continues to push forward, even after learning of her ex-husband’s death. At only 57, the iconic singer died from a Fentanyl overdose in his Paisley Park compound. “There’s no man who could literally take my pantsuit, eyeliner and mascara and rock it better than me,” Garcia said. “There’s just nobody like him.”
Garica’s memoir will officially be available for purchase next month, precisely a year after her ex-husband’s passing.
