“While Writing for ‘Orange is the New Black,’ I Realized I Am Gay” is the name of an article writer Lauren Morelli penned for the Identities section of Mic in May of 2014. A little under three years later, on March 25th of 2017, Morelli married one of the actresses from her hit Netflix show: Samira Wiley, more commonly known as Poussey Washington.
The two tied the knot in Palm Springs, California – the same place that they got engaged in 2016. They confirmed their engagement via matching Instagram photos that Wiley captioned “yes” and Morelli captioned a red heart.
This engagement followed Morelli’s 2014 divorce from The Goldbergs producer Steve Basilone, to whom she was married to for two years. In her emotional article, Morelli explains the pain that came from her realization about her sexuality,:
While it certainly would have been disorienting to begin to question my sexuality after three decades of knowing myself, it was particularly blinding because I’d gotten married only a few months before.
She described her nuptials with Basilone as “the sort of wedding that makes you believe in absolute partnership and the strength that can come from facing obstacles, like the life-threatening illness that my new husband had battled for the majority of our relationship.” For this reason, it was “a punch in the gut every time” she had to announce her divorce.
According to her article, she realized she was not attracted to men about two years before she filed for divorce from Basilone:
I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set. It wasn’t so much one thing, but the sum of many small details: how uncomfortable I felt around groups of lesbians or how I considered myself (shrug) a ‘not very sexual person.’
However, despite the inner turmoil that came from this experience, Morelli ends her article on a positive note.
This is my story, which is messy and nuanced and a constantly moving target, but one I’m grateful for. I encourage you to embrace your own narrative, whatever that may be. It will be worth the effort. I promise.
Wifey for Lifey. (There are approximately one thousand people to thank for making this the best day of my life. But for now: @bethhelmstetter for her insane planning, talent and vision, @csiriano for making me look and feel like a gay superhero queen, @kristinafrisch for making my face look great, @melschaefers for giving me the best hair every day.)
Because of the heartache that plagued Morelli initially, her wedding to Wiley is all the more beautiful. According to Martha Stewart Weddings, which had exclusive report on the event, the outdoor ceremony was officiated by Wiley’s parents. The pair walked down the aisle to the tune of “This is How We Do It,” both wearing Christian Siriano gowns. The wedding was dominated by bright colors, with garlands and string lights hanging over floral-and-citrus centerpieces. A blast of confetti also exploded over their first dance.
Wiley and Morelli are celebrating their wedding with a honeymoon, and more photos will be available in the next issue of Martha Stewart Weddings. Congratulations to the happy couple!
