It’s official, The Mindy Project is coming to an end.

The last season will premiere on Hulu, however, the episode count has not been confirmed, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news was announced after the premiere of the surprising season finale.

However, the news was anticipated. Kaling has just finished filming Ava DuVernay’s, A Wrinkle In Time, and already has big plans for the final season. She told Variety in June, “I have an ending in mind”, hinting that the end was in sight.

While the announcement brings sad news for fans, Hulu and Kaling are both honored to have collaborated together. “You have dreams of one day directing movies or writing movies in addition to doing TV, and I think the wonderful thing about Hulu is, it’s really let me express that side of me,” Kaling told THR. Hulu’s head of content, Craig Erwich, shares a similar sentiment. In an interview with Variety, he stated, ““It has been an honor and a joy to work with Mindy and the entire creative team behind ‘The Mindy Project.”

The Mindy Project, created by Kaling, first premiered on Fox for three seasons before being canceled in 2015. Hulu decided to pick up the series just a few weeks after its cancellation. Since then, Hulu has premiered both season four and five of the series. This included a whopping 26 episodes for season four and 14 episodes for season five. The Mindy Project is also in syndication on both Freeform and VH1.

Although The Mindy Project is coming to an end, Kaling has a busy schedule ahead of her. Kaling is set to star in the newest edition of Ocean’s 8, joining the likes of Rihanna and Sandra Bullock. Kaling is also executive producing a comedy pilot for NBC, in which she would star, if the show is greenlit. Hulu will also be premiering several new comedy series, including Future Man, with executive producers, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen.
