What ever happened to the Banks family after they sang “Let’s go fly a kite,” and the iconic British nanny flew away with her umbrella? Fans of the original Walt Disney’s “Marry Poppins” can rejoice, after fifty years the beloved movie that cemented Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke into Hollywood is getting a sequel.
Marry Poppins was based on author P.L Travers’ series. The film and books depicted how Marry Poppins help the absent Mr. Banks reconnect with his wife and two children through songs and magic. However, after Mary Poppins left there were still several books left in the series. Leaving room for a very important questions: would there ever be a Mary Poppins sequel?
Finally, the answer is yes. The sequel will follow a grown up Michael Banks living in Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane with family during the 1930s. Unfortunately, (spoiler alert) his wife has died and him and his three children are destroyed. Now it is up to Mary Poppins to once again lift up the Banks’ family spirits, as she takes the Banks children on a string of adventures.
The film will star Emily Blunt as Marry Poppins, along with Julie Andrews’ blessing for the role. As well as, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will portray a character similar to Dick Van Dykes. There have also been rumors of Dick Van Dyke cameo, who many have seen on the film’s set. The film will be directed by “Into the Woods” director, Rob Marshall, who is well aware that this film is one of the most anticipated sequels ever.
“The bar is so high for this. But to be able to walk in the footsteps of this beautiful story about a woman who brings magic to this family that’s looking for wonder and hope and joy in their lives… I feel a great responsibility and reverence every day. We all feel it. We’re just lifting it up to get there with the right intentions behind it.”
Marry Poppins will in theaters Christmas 2018. A long time from now, but surely worth the wait.
