After five years without releasing new music, Kesha debuted her new single “Praying” Thursday morning which is set to appear on her upcoming album Rainbow.
The 30-year-old singer wrote the song alongside Ryan Lewis, Andrew Joslyn and Ben Abraham. In her music video, Kesha is wearing angel wings while she plays the piano. The video’s style is especially interesting as it goes back and forth between black-and-white scenes to images filled with vibrant colors.
The lyrics themselves are extremely powerful as they speak of pain and inner strength: “You brought the flames and you put me through hell/ I had to learn how to fight for myself,” “‘Cause I can make it on my own/ And I don’t need you, I’ve found a strength I’ve never known.”
Kesha opens the song with a spoken-word monologue in which she speaks about feelings of abandonment. She says,
Am I dead? Or is this one of those dreams? Those horrible dreams that seem like they last forever? If I am alive, why? If there is a God or whatever, something, somewhere, why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I’ve ever known? I’ve ever loved? Stranded. What is the lesson? What is the point? God, give me a sign, or I have to give up. I can’t do this anymore. Please just let me die. Being alive hurts too much.
The “We R Who We R” singer will feature several artists on her new album such as Eagles of Death Metal, Dolly Parton, Ricky Reed, and the Dap-Kings horn section. However, her most special collaboration will be with her own mother, Pebe Sebert.
