Christian Siriano is already known for using his designs to promote body, ethnic and age diversity among real women. Well, now Siriano is bringing his talents to a few, much smaller clients.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Siriano partnered up with Mattel to design a collection of red-carpet looks for the diverse body types of Barbie’s Fashionista line.
So excited!!!! #repost: Introducing our series of one-of-a-kind looks by @csiriano, inspired by his iconic red carpet moments. Through his inclusive and diverse designs, Siriano has become known for embracing body positivity and celebrating role models. See more details from these looks now in @barbiestyle's Stories! ❤️ #barbie #barbiestyle
In a statement, Siriano said that “Barbie has always been a huge inspiration to me and I’m honored to be teaming up with this iconic brand. “It’s especially exciting to be designing an array of inclusive and diverse doll looks that can allow girls to see themselves better represented when they play.”
One of the final looks is a re-creation of one of his pieces from his 2018 Resort collection, while the red gown in the collection is a particular standout. The dress is a re-creation of the gown that Siriano designed for Leslie Jones for her Ghostbusters premiere after the actress tweeted that she had nothing to wear. With his spring 2018 show in New York Fashion Week and dressing actresses like Samira Wiley and Judith Light for the Emmy’s, Siriano has been really busy on top of this barbie collection. Unfortunately, Siriano’s barbie line will not go on sale.
Barbie, along with Mattel, have been working towards diversity recently, introducing new body types, ethnicities and personas. The Ken dolls even got a major makeover in 2017 that included new body types, ethnicities and hairstyles (which means man-buns).
With this Siriano and Mattel team-up, little girls might just start to see themselves in the toys they play with.
