If you were a fan of the UK Drama Top Boy before the series was canceled after its second season, you’re about to really appreciate Drake.
Drake confirmed rumors that he will revive the British TV drama and that the third season will air as a Netflix original in 2019 — six years since the series was originally canceled.
Top Boy depicts drug, crime and street life in Hackney, East London, and the reboot will take place with Dushane returning from exile to London to reclaim his superiority in the drug world. The original cast and creative team will be returning for the reboot as well.
“I am delighted to be reunited once more with the Top Boy team – our wonderful cast and my partners at Cowboy Films – and to have Drake and SpringHill as new collaborators,” said Ronan Bennett, writer and creator of the series. “And I could not be prouder to be doing the show with Netflix.”
Drake said via The Hollywood Reporter that he purchased the rights to the series and has been a longtime fan of the show. He will be working as an executive producer alongside Adel “Future” Nur.
“We couldn’t be more excited for Netflix members around the world and a new generation of fans to discover the authentic, raw and real world of Top Boy,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix. “Drake came to us several months ago with a passion to help bring this series back to life, and we’re thrilled to support the original creative team to do just that.”
The first two seasons originally aired on channel 4 in the UK but both seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix. The third season will premiere as a Netflix original.
