Willow Smith Opens Up About Why She Hates Being Famous

You might know Willow Smith as the daughter of actor Will Smith and Jada PinkettSmith, or by her beloved song from 2010, “Whip My Hair.” Although the 17 year old lives a life that most would wish for, when asked if she liked being famous, she gave an unexpected response by replying, “to be completely and utterly honest, it’s absolutely excruciatingly terrible.”

“Growing up and trying to figure out your life…while people feel like they have some sort of entitlement to know what’s going on, is absolutely, excruciatingly terrible — and the only way to get over it, is to go into it,” she said.

“You can’t change your face. You can’t change your parents. You can’t change any of those things. So I feel like most kids like me end up going down a spiral of depression, and the world is sitting there looking at them through their phones; laughing and making jokes and making memes at the crippling effect that this lifestyle has on the psyche,” she continued.

Me: becoming gradually more angry and overwhelmed by all the BS that comes with being born on this Earth. #UGH

Willow also discusses how fame can be harmful to a young person’s mental health.

“I feel like most kids like me end up going down a spiral of depression, and the world is sitting there looking at them through their phones; laughing and making jokes and making memes at the crippling effect that this lifestyle has on the psyche.”

With all of the chaos going on in Willow’s world, her respect for her parents remains the same. In an interview with Pharrell in 2016, she has previously admired her parents for how they’ve raised her and praised the example they set for her as a child.
