With the premiere of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Star Wars fans are lining up in movie theaters around the country to see the latest film in the saga.

The Last Jedi is expected to bring in $555 million opening weekend, an optimistic start to for the franchise. The film continues the story of Luke Skywalker, connecting this movie directly to the original trilogy, as the sequel to The Force Awakens which released in 2015. The Last Jedi takes place right where The Force Awakens leaves off. Rey (Daisy Ridley) has traveled to meet Luke (Mark Hamill) in hopes to have him mentor her in the ways of the Force. Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) are leading the fight against General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) and the First Order. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is being punished for losing Rey by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) and spends most of the movie telepathically connected with Rey.

Rey is now trying to figure out where she fits in the Jedi world and questions the outcome of her future and Luke has to make some life decisions himself. The Guardian writes, “Hamill comes into his own here with a very intelligent and sympathetic portrayal of his great character. Luke is now part Prospero, part Achilles. He is potentially the great magician or teacher on this remote island, in a position to induct Rey into the Zen priesthood of the Force, and show her it is not just a matter of silly conjuring tricks and making rocks rise into the air.”

The late Carrie Fisher’s presence in the film will be particularly special for Star Wars fans after her unexpected death at the end of 2016. Joe Robberson, a writer for, commented on his appreciation for Fisher’s role in the movie. “She brings gravitas to her final performance as Leia that wasn’t there in The Force Awakens. She also finds her sense of humor, something the entire movie has on the other sequels.” Expect to see more humor in The Last Jedi as well. Robberson adds, “The Last Jedi is probably the funniest Star Wars installment since the original. From the creature designs (Total Recall fans will howl) to the straight up joke writing, the film is surprisingly light, considering how dark it gets.”

The Force Awakens made over $2 billion and became the highest-grossing film in history. The Last Jedi is anticipated to make an even bigger impact on the Star Wars franchise. Check out the trailer below.
