Marc Jacobs has just announced Frances Bean Cobain as the face of his SS17 collection. The daughter of legendary grunge musicians Curt Cobain and Courtney Love, Frances has previously been approached by many labels for endorsements but turned them all down. Speaking on finally deciding to work with a label, she says
“I don’t model unless I think the project is cool, and I don’t put my name behind something that I don’t genuinely believe in. I thought this collection was great, and I was flattered that Marc thought of me for this. What I said to Marc when I was saying yes [and accepting his offer] was that he’s an underdog for the masses. He’s still very rebellious within the fashion world, and he’s been like that his entire career.”
Shot by David Sims, the shoot was true to Cobain’s laid-back, nonchalant self. Stylists used makeup from right out of her purse and left her hair as it was. Basically, Cobain was just outfitted in Marc Jacobs’ SS17 pieces and put in front of a camera. Commenting on the nature of the shoot, Cobain said
“I’m not representing the beautiful top models of the world. I’m representing what a general, standard, average human girl would look like wearing these clothes. I think that’s why Marc picked me for this. The shoot had a very organic feel…they just put me in the clothes.”
When it comes to personal style, Cobain isn’t interested in the current obsession with 90’s looks, despite having parents who are undeniably the decade’s biggest icons.
“I don’t fucking care what they did in the ’90s; I wasn’t around and it’s not relevant to me,” she says. “Yes, the ’90s were influential, for sure, but it’s just not my cup of tea. When it’s shoved down your throat every day for 24 years, you just stop caring.”
So what does she wear on a daily basis? Cobain is a simple jeans, t-shirt, and boots girl. She calls this her “daily uniform,” as she appreciates fashion but does not wish to put too much energy into her own wardrobe. Though she may call herself “lazy” when it comes to fashion, there’s no doubt Frances Cobain has style, with her signature outfit, dark locks, and painted pout.
As for pursuing any other modeling gigs after working with Marc Jacobs? Cobain gives that idea a hard pass. Though she agreed to work with the label for their campaign, she says she wouldn’t have done it for anyone else; she definitely does not see herself doing any modeling for a long, long time.
