Balenciaga Redefines the “Reusable Shopping Tote”

A show-goer sports the Balenciaga shopping tote at Milan Fashion Week on June 19, 2017.

As the creative director for Vetements and Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia tends to use similar design concepts for both brands. His most recent trick is sending basic items down the runway.

Gvasalia recently released a $700 cotton Hanes tee embroidered with the word “t-shirt” for Vetements, but his latest creation is a couture version of the Balenciaga shopping bag.

A typical Balenciaga shopping bag is made of white cardboard and black rope handles and has Balenciaga written across the front in minimal black font. The new design has the same exact look, only it is made of white calfskin leather and Nappa leather handles. The new design retails for $1,100, while the original version is free with any Balenciaga purchase.

It might look the same as its paper counterpart, but this version is much sturdier. People will definitely have mixed feelings about this bag, but it is already sold out on French boutique Colette’s website. Can you say, “grocery store couture?”
