On Monday, a white crocodile version of the tote sold for more than $377,0000 on luxury auction site, Christie’s. The bag is made of a Niloticus crocodile skin, complete with a white gold closure encrusted with Himalayan diamonds.
A typical Hermes Birkin bag is made of calf, crocodile or ostrich leather, and ranges between $8,000-$12,000. Each bag is handcrafted in France and can take more than 24 hours to make. Factors like exclusivity and unique textures cause the price to vary.
In a 2016 press release, Christie’s stated that handbags with Himalayan diamonds are the most sought-after, valuable style, justifying their high-tiered price point. The company sold an older, similar Birkin last year for around $300,000.
“It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced each year, globally, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags,” they said.
“The striking coloration from stark white to dark grey is one of the finest gradients seen on a Himalaya.”
