Justin Bieber is dipping his toes in the fashion world and wants to share his favorite t-shirts with the world. Bieber gave his stylist Karla Welch the unusual task of creating a line of longline t-shirts that match his body type because according to Welsh, “no long shirts are available.”
In order to resolve this dilemma, Welsh had brought packs of the largest size of Hanes cotton T-shirts (because Bieber preferred the fabric the most), and cut them down until they were to Bieber’s liking. The collaboration between Welch and Hanes allowed her to create her own brand, x Karla.
Reminiscent of the days when Kanye West was selling $120 plain white t shirts, Welch assures that Bieber’s brand is different (and not as overpriced). During an interview with Vogue, she explained the reasoning behind the design. According to Welch, the shirt’s selling point is its necessity and described it as “future vintage.”
“Everybody needs it. Every culture and subculture has used the white T-shirt. That’s where the genius is.”
The shirts come in 7 different types, each sporting the Hanes’ classic white tee look. They’re currently available for $30 on Welch’s website. They won’t be sold in any major retail stores anytime soon, however there will be a pop-up at Maxfield in L.A. on August 6. A second collection is also planned for October.
