With a successful makeup line and a new line of foundations coming out next month, Huda Kattan talks shade-matching, the products she really buys, and make-up breaks.

In an interview with Elle Magazine, the founder of Huda Beauty discussed her new line, Faux Filter Foundation, the 30-shade range that had to look like real skin.

“We’d pull people from restaurants and hotels,” she revealed, showing that she didn’t use a database like her competitors. “I would see people with an interesting skin tone and I would say, ‘can you come into our office? I want to shade test you.’”

Despite being the head of a successful cosmetics company, she still stocks up on products when she visits the United States.

“One product I swear by is Ren Rose Oil,” Kattan explained. “We still don’t have Skinceuticals in Dubai, which is madness to me. I swear by the Rose oil and the Skinceuticals Skin Firming Cream. I feel like it’s really helping my pores.”

She also shops Lorac, Oribe, and R + Co, plus popping into Sally Beauty Supply for little items like hair ties, hair clips, and brushes.

“I left L.A. with three luggages and I came back with fifteen or sixteen. It’s a lot. I had three bags just filled with makeup and haircare products,” she said. She also isn’t afraid to ball out the dough for supplies.

“I can spend a minimum of $4,000 a month on makeup,” Kattan revealed. “There are so many indie brands like Dose of Color, Morphe and Lime Crime that I like to buy, or I’m impulsively shopping on Sephora or Net-A-Porter.”

Yet, even with all of these products, Kattan still takes breaks on the weekends from makeup to let her skin breathe. At first, Kattan recalled being uncomfortable going out and having pictures taken of her without her signature beauty look, but now it’s all about being comfortable in your skin.

“I think being comfortable in your own skin, the better you’re going to feel about it, the more confident you’re going to feel about it,” she said.
