When asked about how they keep their marriage alive, famous couple Victoria and David Beckham replied with simple advice: “It’s about working through it.” In a radio interview with BBC’s Desert Island Discs, the soccer player talked about his complicated 17 year long marriage to the former Spice Girl.
In the radio interview, Beckham said, “Of course you make mistakes over the years, and we all know marriage is difficult at times.” One of the mistakes he cited was their famously over-the-top wedding ceremony in 1999 at the Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland, during which the bride wore a silk Vera Wang gown and an 18-karat-gold tiara. The couple even donned matching vibrant purple outfits during the reception, about which Beckham said, “That was pretty bold. Victoria’s [reception outfit] was pretty nice. Mine, I’m like ‘What was I thinking?’ I look like the guys out of Dumb & Dumber when they went to that party and wore those ridiculous outfits… What was I thinking?”
However, it seems that the couple has learned the errors of their glamorous ways; in the same interview, Beckham revealed, “We have renewed our vows since then and it was a lot more private…There were about six people there in our house.”
Based on his interview, it is clear that the couple still stands in solidarity, despite his regrets about a certain purple ensemble. Perhaps one of the most memorable lines of the interview was also the most romantic, as he definitively commented on the love he and his wife share when he said, “We know each other better than anybody. People have talked about, ‘Do we stay together because it’s a brand?’ Of course not. We stay together because we love each other, because we have four amazing children.”
