After much anticipation, a teaser for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie starring Scarlett Johansson has finally dropped. The film is an American adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same title, created by Masamune Shirow. Ghost in the Shell sees Johansson as a human-cyborg hybrid, known as The Major, who is part of a covert ops unit of elite task force “Section 9.” The casting of Johansson as The Major came much to the dismay of fans of the original manga and has caused significant controversy, as many feel the movie is being “whitewashed” more so than being “adapted” by Hollywood.
When asked about the controversial choice, the film’s director Rupert Sanders responded,
“To me, you know, I cast very much from the gut and I think I was very lucky to be able to get an amazing international cast of people that I’ve always really wanted to work with. Scarlett was one of those people…she’s got an incredible body of work and the attitude and toughness of her really is to me The Major.
I think whenever you cast someone someone’s going to be critical about it. To me it was, you know, I stand by my decision — she’s the best actress of her generation and I was flattered and honored that she would be in this film. So many people who were around the original anime have been vehemently in support of her because she’s incredible and there are very few like her.”

Everything they told her was a lie.
