With the 2017 MTV Music Video Awards just around the corner, MTV has announced all of the show’s nominations. Kendrick Lamar is ahead of the competition with eight nominations, including Video of the Year for “HUMBLE,” Artist of the Year, and Best Hip-Hop.
Following Lamar are Katy Perry and The Weeknd, who are each nominated for five awards.
A few adjustments have been made to award categories this year, more specifically the Best Male and Female Video category. For the first time in VMA history, the category will be combined into the non-gendered category: Artist of the Year. Aside from Lamar, nominees in this category include Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, and Lorde.
A new category, “Best Fight Against the System” was also added in order “to celebrate videos that inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice.” The nominees for this new category are Logic feat. Damian Lemar Hudson’s, “Black SpiderMan,” Big Sean’s “Light,” Alessia Cara’s, “Scars to Your Beautiful,” Taboo feat. Shailene Woodley’s “Stand Up / Stand N Rock #NoDAPL,” and John Legend’s “Surefire.”
Nomination announcements were made today via Instagram by social media stars, Bretman Rock, Ariel Martin (Baby Ariel), DC Young Fly, Andrea Russet, Chantel Jeffries, Ricky Dillon, StassiBaby, Jay Versace and Nate Garner.
Starting today, fans can vote for their favorite nominee in eight different categories – including “Video of the Year,” “Artist of the Year,” “Best Fight Against the System,” and many more.
The 2017 VMAs will air live from the Forum in Inglewood, California on Sunday, August 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
