Since the How I Met Your Mother series ended back in 2014, there have been multiple attempts at creating spinoff to the popular sitcom but nothing seemed to make the cut. However, Fox chairman Dana Walden told Deadline that a new team of writers has taken on the challenge of creating a successful spinoff for the series.

Previously, a spinoff titled How I Met Your Dad was in the works but was eventually canceled after co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger focused their attention on the success of the hit series, This Is Us. 20th Century Fox TV has a brand new team of writers working on writing the spinoff.

“They will be starting from scratch,” Walden said on the new effort to create the series. “It’s one that’s been slowly cooked. If it’s the right idea the right execution, we’ll take that.”

The potential spinoff is still in its early stages and there’s no confirmation as to whether or not the series will eventually hit production, but producers are keeping the option open if the show is written well.

“We’ve had conversations for a full year about a potential spinoff, no one has written it yet,” Walden said. “Ultimately I think if something comes organically out of the show, we’d pursue it. We don’t want to force it on the show because if it doesn’t feel organic it will feel like it will be just a distraction from the flagship. We really believe in the show, we want it to live for a very long time and at a certain point, after one-two seasons, the creators felt that the flagship was the priority and we support that.”
